According to multiple news sources and a press release Jessica Aguilar has been released from WSOF and is now seeking employment with the UFC.
LAS VEGAS (May 18, 2015) –World Series of Fighting (WSOF.com) has released women’s world strawweight (115 pounds) champion Jessica “JAG” Aguilar from her remaining contractual obligations that spanned one additional fight with the world championship Mixed Martial Arts
(MMA) promotion, so that she can ideally pursue competition where it is strongest in her weight division.
“We wish Jessica all the best, and hope that she will achieve everything she wants to in her career that is blossoming,” said WSOF President Ray Sefo. “We sat down with Jessica and her manager and we all agreed that she needs to move on to a place where she can compete against the best 115 pound women in the world.
“We have an incredible and fast-growing roster of world-class athletes at WSOF,” continued Sefo, “but we do not have the best fighters in this particular women’s weight class, so it was time to shake hands and amicably part ways.”
On MMA Fighting’s The MMA Hour Jessica stated that she was released is wanting to become the new Strawweight Champion for the UFC. Jessica who is (19-4) and is ranked #1 in the world in many of the ranking websites including wmma world rankings is looking to make a big impact in the UFC.
Jessica was the first female fighter to win a champion belt at WSOF and will probably be the last, it seems that WSOF has lost interest in women’s mixed martial arts in that division for now.
It looks like Jessica will be gunning for the top spot in the UFC and that will be Joanna J who is the current champion, do you think she will get a shot right away or will she need a few fights before she gets a shot? I am sure that many of the fighters in the UFC strawweight division will be weighing in and making sure they get the shot first before Aguilar.
We could be seeing some social media battles in the next couple months and there was a few jabs already thrown between Esparza and Aguilar and I expect it to get worse.
Good luck to Jessica on her next adventure and may God Bless her.
