Fighter Interview With Monica “Phenomamom” Medina
Name: Monica “Phenomamom” Medina
Age: 31
Location: D’Iberville, Mississippi
Gym: Alan Belcher MMA Club
Weight Class: Flyweight
Pro/Ammy: Pro
For those of our readers who don’t know a great deal about you, please write a short bio. I started fighting in January of 2014. As an ammy I was 7-2, and held two title belts in the flyweight division. I was the Fight Force International female flyweight champ and the Atlas Fights female flyweight champ. I will be making my pro debut in early 2016.
Have you been involved in any sports other than martial arts? In high school I played basketball and ran track. After graduating I didn’t play any sports. I found martial arts at the age of 29 and realized it was my passion.
How did you get involved in MMA? I was your average mom at the gym watching my kids do jiu Jitsu classes. After about two years of watching I tried a jiu Jitsu class and fell in love. I was 190 pounds when I started and after a year of training I was down 50 pounds. Once I lost that weight I gave MMA a try and have not looked back. I was born for this sport and I thank everyone at Alan Belcher MMA Club for pushing me to pursue my passion!
What is your record and do you have any impending fights? My record as an ammy is 7-2. I am tentatively scheduled to make my pro debut in February of 2016.
What is the status of your MMA journey and where do you see it leading? I am ready to join the professional ranks. As an ammy I have been super active. I fought 4 times in 2014 and 5 times in 2015. I am looking to be just as active as a pro. I have poured my heart and soul into fighting and I plan on taking this journey as far as possible! I train under UFC fighter Alan Belcher so I definitely have the UFC in my sights one day!
Tell us a bit about your life outside the cage. Outside of the cage I am one of the kickboxing instructors at Alan Belcher MMA Club. I spend a majority of my days at the gym as I teach and help with all aspects of running out gym. I am the mom of 3 amazing kids and I have a beautiful wife by my side. We recently got married (Sept. 25th) and she is such an amazing support system. My life is super busy and I wouldn’t change it for anything!
Do you currently have a nickname in this sport? If so, what is it and why? My nickname is Phenomamom. I got it from some of my students. My son is a little jiu Jitsu phenom and his nickname is Lil Phenom so as his mom the name Phenomamom seemed fitting.
If you could offer one bit of advice to an aspiring fighter what would it be? I would tell them to put their heart and soul into their fighting career and never look back! Fighting is not just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. It’s one of the realest sports out there. It takes a special kind of person to step inside the cage. There will be setbacks and times where you question yourself, but always remember why you started this journey and use rant as motivation to keep pursing your dreams!
Would you like to give a shout out to any sponsors or individuals who have supported you? I would like to say thanks to my gym family at Alan Belcher MMA Club. My partner Miki Rogers who has been my main training partner since day one I just wanna say thanks for all that you have done to help me become the fighter I am today! I wanna shout out my coaches Alan Belcher, Aaron Williams, and of course Lamart Logan. These guys have poured so much knowledge into me about this game and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. My sponsor Martial Arts Life, thanks for everything. And of course my family. I work my butt off for them, for my kids and my wife. They are my motivation for doing what I do and I won’t stop until I make it to the top!
